Saturday March 23 will be a special night at the Rushe Photography Gallery at the Malbon in Bungendore. A new joint exhibition by award winning local photographer Jerusha McDowell is opening at her gallery, a collaboration with friend and acclaimed woven sculpture artist Linda Coomber.
‘Common Threads’ brings together the shared elements of both mediums in a beautiful celebration of
tone and texture, landscape and form.
Jerusha who’s ongoing project ‘Where The Snowy Mountain Stockmen Used To Ride’ earned her a Top 5 place in last years International Photography Awards is very excited about the collaboration. “Our work shares so many common elements despite being such different mediums and a collaborative show is something I have wanted to do at the gallery for some time, I am thrilled to finally be doing it!” Internationally recognised, Jerusha’s distinctive work has a cinematic quality rooted in visual storytelling. The soft muted tones of her landscapes meld beautifully with the natural materials and textures of Linda’s woven sculptures.
Linda’s work combines natural materials in beautiful and often functional pieces. One of her signature materials are naturally shed deer antlers, which she uses as handles and frames for handwoven baskets. “I love the idea of bringing the natural world into our interiors” She says. Her work recently took out First Prize for Sculpture in both the E.J. Mantova Memorial Art Competition and the Coffs Coast Art Prize. She is also a regular contributor to the prestigious invitation only Packsaddle exhibition at the New England Regional Art Museum in Armidale.
‘We both produce work that bears our unique stamp” Says Linda. “But together we create something greater than our individual talents. It’s wonderful to see how well our two art forms combine into a whole. It may be a reflection of our long and enduring friendship.’
Opening night will be a great opportunity for people to see the whole show before pieces are sold. And will be the only opportunity for people to meet both artists with Linda travelling down from the North Coast for the event. The exhibition will run throughout March and April, however with all works available for purchase, it will be worth seeing it early.
The night will also see the spacious new outdoor cafe space at the Malbon open for dinner and live music. The newly renovated cafe space is an exciting new addition to the growing collective at the Malbon, offering locals and visitors relaxed dining and gourmet take away menu. The Exhibition opening will kick off at 5pm in the Gallery with guests invited to join the artists for champagne and nibbles. Eric’s at the Malbon will be open for dinner with live music throughout the evening, and the Malbon will be open for extended late night trading.
