Current owner Gabriele Borscz took private ownership of The Doncaster approximately two years ago, turning the heritage building into a bespoke countryside oasis in the heart of Braidwood. The strategic location of The Doncaster within Braidwood provided the ideal canvas for her vision of creating a bespoke guest house.
Gabriele desribes that the town’s history, ambience, and connection to nature served as extra wellsprings of inspiration when designing the hotel. She had a vision of “curating an experience that bridges eras, with the aim of immersing guests in past charm, surrounded by contemporary elements”. In essence, the inspiration behind The Doncaster stemmed from honouring history, offering unique accommodation, and enriching Braidwood’s allure. The Doncaster vision is driven by Gabriele’s passion for architecture, design, and hospitality.

The Doncaster’s Rich and Eventful History
Gabriele recounts that the captivating journey of The Doncaster began in the 1840s, when the establishment was known as The Doncaster Hotel, a lively hub for travellers and locals. However, fate had more to unveil. With the passage of time came transformation. It evolved into a sanctuary for the Good Samaritan nuns, embodying a new purpose within the community. Then, an unexpected turn transpired in the 1880s. A fire that swept through part of the building ignited a rebuild mission that demonstrated resourcefulness and commitment to preserving history.
Interestingly, during World War 2, children from Sydney were sent to Braidwood for safekeeping due to the fear of Japanese invasion. Many of these children did not see their families for up to two years and lived in crowded conditions at the convent, some even sleeping on the upper veranda all year round.
In the 1970s the convent was privately sold, and the original name of the first hotel was revived and The Doncaster was once again open to the public. Fast-forward to 1976, and a fresh chapter emerged. The property shifted once again, taking on a new identity. It was sold and thoughtfully transformed into an accommodation, reclaiming its historic name as ‘The Doncaster Hotel’. This journey through history exemplifies the remarkable flexibility of spaces, from a vibrant hotel to a serene convent—the Doncaster’s narrative dances in harmony with the changing times.
The Doncaster Guest House stands out with a unique charm that distinguishes it from other hotels in the region. Its historical significance is a standout feature – once a hotel, then a convent, and now a guest house, its journey through time adds depth and uniqueness. The incredible architectural design offers a layout and aesthetic that is far from ordinary. Furthermore, The Doncaster’s strong connection to cultural heritage adds richness to the experience. It is a space that invites you to connect with history and experience something special.

The Unique Design Process and Architectural Curation of the Space
The unique bedroom design for the guest house drew inspiration from the nearby botanical surroundings. Gabriele describes that the goal was to create tranquil and elegant spaces that connect seamlessly with nature’s serenity, while showcasing timeless craftsmanship. Materials like wood, metal, and linen were carefully layered to shape the tactile feel of the rooms.
Every piece at The Doncaster has been carefully curated from around the world, reflecting Gabriele’s time living abroad. Sourced from India, Indonesia, Europe, and the Middle East, each item tells a unique tale. Local auction houses have also unveiled extraordinary finds, adding to their diverse collection. “Our approach to sourcing respects the intricate tapestry of design across cultures, infusing The Doncaster’s spaces with an exotic charm; Each piece contributes to the narrative, creating an authentic and captivating environment.”
Wedding Season and the Exciting new Chapel Space
Not only is The Doncaster the perfect getaway, but it is also an incredible wedding venue. The chapel at The Doncaster is a beautiful and charming venue, boasting intricate chandeliers, soaring ceilings, and a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor elegance. The enchanting garden rooms add to the venue’s allure, providing options for both indoor ceremonies and outdoor receptions in the garden or marquee. Their adaptable spaces promise a truly unforgettable event.
Gabriele announces that “after years of renovation, it is with great excitement that The Doncaster will be opening its doors to the public as a one-of-a-kind event venue”.
