2. Googong Foreshores
Within an easy 10km drive from the Queanbeyan District lies the flourishing township of Googong. Known for its serene foreshores and striking London Bridge Arch, Googong remains a favourite day-trip destination among locals and visitors. This popularity can be attributed to its historic features, spectacular landscapes and endless recreation opportunities.
Whether you’re looking to escape the city to observe some wildlife and take in the impressive scenery, or get active with a range of outdoor activities such as canoeing, fishing and mountain biking, the foreshores are guaranteed to show you a good time.
The northern parts of the foreshores play host to the Googong Dam. Here, you can explore the areas’ lookouts and bushland along the Dam’s walking trails, or take in the stunning views while enjoying a nice picnic or a barbecue.
For visitors with electric motor boats, the North Foreshore also features a boat launch for easy access. Sailing boats, kayaks, and canoes are a regular sighting along the foreshores waters. If staying on land is more to your liking, the foreshores boast plenty of trails that are perfect for walking and mountain biking.
For those looking to have a dip in the water on those scorching summer days, the best spot is downstream the Queanbeyan River, below the dam wall, as swimming is not permitted in the dam.
Perhaps the most photographed feature of the Foreshores, the London Bridge Arch is located to the south off Burra Road.
This awe-inspiring natural bridge was originally formed from limestone over thousands of years and is now the number one attraction in the area, only a short walk from the trail head.
3. Molonglo Gorge
Set within a stones throw from Queanbeyan and a quick drive from Canberra is the hidden gem of Molonglo Gorge. Located in the Kowen Forrest, the Gorge provides locals and visitors with a peaceful escape from the city for a few hours.
The Gorge was formed 15 million years ago, as the Molonglo river carved its way through the rocky land lifted up by the Lake George and Queanbeyan faults, creating what is now known as the stunning Molonglo Gorge. Made up of unspoiled bush, cascades, and pools, it is the perfect day trip destination for those looking to take some time off in serene natural surroundings.
Here, you will find the blue tiles walk – a moderate walk along the Molonglo River. After about a 3km walk, you will reach the small grassed picnic area of Blue Tiles with a charming view of the Molonglo River. Recharge and snap some photos of the great outdoors before heading back to the recreation area.
